Higham Lane School

Headteacher's Welcome

Thank you very much for taking the time to visit our website.

Higham Lane School is a high-performing 11-18 Comprehensive Academy and Aspiring Teaching School with approximately 1400 students on roll, based on an attractive site in the north east of Nuneaton, on the Warwickshire-Leicestershire border. The School is judged as outstanding by Ofsted.

Achievement in all forms: artistic, academic, social, cultural, sporting and intellectual are equally valued. Our wide curriculum gives scope for students to express preferences and enhance their abilities. They revel in the wide range of opportunities we offer them: taking part in our annual school drama production and music concerts; foreign exchanges to develop language skills; a huge range of trips that enhance curriculum understanding; visits to support our link school in The Gambia; Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions and so on. We are especially proud of our sporting traditions which have seen netballers and footballers regularly reach national and regional finals. All of these activities widen our learners’ life experiences.

We are strongly committed to ensuring that all of the young people in our care make excellent academic progress and we take great pride in securing both impressive progress and high attainment for our students, whatever their starting points. Higham Lane is amongst the highest-achieving non-selective comprehensive schools in Warwickshire and performs within the top 15% of schools nationally.

Students performed exceptionally well in the 2019 GCSE qualifications.  82% of students achieved five or more Standard Passes including at least Grade 4 in English and Maths. 61% achieved five or more Strong Passes including at least Grade 5, in English and Maths, significantly above both the Local Authority average and the National average. 89% of students achieved a Grade 4 or above in English, 86% in Maths and 82% in at least two Sciences. The Progress 8 figure (which is the Government measure of students’ progress) for this cohort was 0.35, which is considered above average. The Department for Education School Performance tables indicate that Higham Lane performs better than most of our statistical comparison schools (schools with a similar intake of students). We were ranked 17th out of 56 similar schools in 2019.

The overwhelming majority of our students continue their studies at post-16 level and we were delighted to open our own Sixth Form in September 2016. In August 2019, 20% of our A level grades were at A*-A; 47% of grades were at grades A*-B. This demonstrates very strong attainment with many students meeting the entry requirements for the top universities in the UK. We are also delighted that our students achieved a 99% pass rate at A-level.

We have been awarded funding to support us in becoming an Aspiring Teaching School and we formed the Higham Lane School Partnership with several other local secondary and primary schools. Teaching Schools work with others to provide high-quality training, development and support to new and experienced school staff. We focus on Initial Teacher Training; continuing professional development; leadership development and school-to-school support. Being an Aspiring Teaching School provides further opportunities for our staff to develop their teaching and leadership skills.

Higham Lane School is more than just a place of work – it is a thriving community, proud of its past and confident of its future. Enjoyment and achievement go hand in hand. The same applies to our staff; they enjoy working here and it is that, more than anything else, which underpins their ambition and fuels their success.

If you require any further information about our school, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Best wishes,

PHIL KELLY, Headteacher
