Experienced staff within the Department teach all three Science disciplines and we have a wide range of individual specialisms that enhance teaching and learning.
The Science facilities at the School are well equipped and well maintained in nine purpose-built laboratories with interactive technology. Staff within the Department are qualified in at least one of the three Sciences and students benefit from the specialist teaching which this allows.
Key Stage 3 students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In all years a variety of teaching techniques are used to develop students' scientific skills.
Like most schools, students start their GCSE studies at the beginning of Year 9 and the majority continue to study for a Combined Science award (two GCSEs) during Year 10 and Year 11. Selected students study Single Sciences (three GCSEs).
We enjoyed excellent results in 2017: GCSE Science A*-C 80.4%; GCSE Additional Science A*-C 80.6%; GCSE Biology A*-A 77.8%, A*-B 100%; GCSE Chemistry A*-A 83.3%, A*-B 100%; GCSE Physics A*-A 72.2%, A*-B 100%.
The Department offers a range of extra curricular activities, including Imagineering and Science Club. In addition, we also organise a number of trips, which in the past have included visits to the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum in London, Birmingham's Thinktank, the National Space Centre, Alton Towers, Middleton Lakes, a two-day residential to London and visits to local universities.
