Topics covered in all three languages include personal information and interests, leisure time, holidays and going places, family life, health and fitness, food and diet, fashion and shopping, and the weather. In Year 7, students are taught in mixed ability groups until December when they are placed in ability groups.
In Key Stage 4, students can opt to study French, German or Spanish, and topics covered include travel and tourism, sport and leisure, media and culture, business work and employment. In 2017, 71.1% of students achieved grades A*-C in GCSE German, 90% in French and 74.4% in Spanish.
Each year, a sizeable number of students go on to study extra-curricular activities, which include a Key Stage 3 homework club and Key Stage 4 homework club. The Department also organises a three-day excursion to Paris for Year 7, 8 and 9, and a German exchange programme for Years 9 and 10 to Münster, Germany.
